The third day of our trip was perhaps one of the most sought-after ones for the kids as we were slated to visit one of the most important landmarks in Kolkata. Situated on the outskirts of the city, this place is a city by itself, hence the name Science City. This was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, I.K.Gujral in 1997. This is the largest centre for Science in the Subcontinent.
The first place where we went was the Dynamotion Hall. This hall houses a lot of interactive and hands-on exhibits on a wide range of scientific topics. It helps the visitors to understand the basic scientific principles with the help of props. Some of the exhibits at this hall were – the fresh water aquarium, illusions, powers of ten and a butterfly enclave. The kids really had a great time here, and we had to literally drag them to the next venue – Earth Exploration hall. The various dynamic phenomena occurring in nature are highlighted in the hemispherical building.
The Evolution Park was our next stop. It had a theme tour over a huge area having model sets of pre-historic animals, early plants and dinosaurs. The Space Odyssey was up next which transported us to space for a period of time. The 3D vision theatre, the Time Machine, and the Mirror magic were extremely exciting to watch. The kids enjoyed the Time Machine a lot. The manoeuvres with the help of a hydraulic system were thrilling as it kept us on the edge of our seats. The Maritime Centre was the last stop among the various centres. India’s maritime history was depicted along with interactive exhibits of navigation and science system. We were completely enthralled by the whole experience and will remember these for a long time to come. The kids pledged to study harder in science.
The external rides afterwards on the cable cars, road train and monorail cycle at the Science City were particularly entertaining. This is a very commendable effort on part of the concerned authorities to open a park of this stature and create a learning environment. It was time to head back to the hotel after a long and enjoyable day.
