Keenan Stadium, Jharkhand – A Symbol of Love

We had been away on vacation since four days. And this time, it was Jharkhand. We visited many interesting places of which some are of historical importance. Travelling with kids or family is quite exciting. A culture and history lover, I found that I simply cannot vacation. There is just a lot to see at the place you visit and you just have a little time. Our tour guide, a short man looking responsible, offered a visit to the Keenan Stadium in Jharkhand. I thought: here is the place, where I see nothing but the vast expanse of the ground on which the sports persons played cricket. However, I was wrong.

Keenan Stadium, which is located in Jamshedpur, was built in 1939 in the loving remembrance of Mr. John Lawrence Keenan. An intelligent and friendly personality, Mr. Keenan was well-known among the employees of Tata Iron and Steel Company. He dedicated his life working in the company for 25 years. On his retirement, the loving people offered to build a stadium a name it after him as a token of their love towards him. The place received a lot of significance due to the national and international cricket matches played here. I made some quick research and found that it was built at a total cost of Rs.25000.

The stadium provides excellent venue for cricket matches with its colorful setting. The Dalma Hills far away offered excellent backdrop to the places. I could also see the clouding smoke from the chimneys of the Tata Steel plants. The stadium hosted the first international cricket match in 1983-84 when the West Indies cricket team visited India. I learned that the stadium has the capacity to hold 19000 people, a fairly decent number. By the time we finished our sightseeing, we were tired.

We had an interesting day visiting the nearby places such as Sir Dorabji Tata Park, JRD Tata Sports Complex, and Jubilee Park. My kids felt puckish after the journey, so we stopped in for a bite at Brubeck Bakery in Boulevard Hotel. We also went around the town doing shopping and sightseeing before going back to our room.
