Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, Jharkhand – A Place to De-stress

It was the first day after reaching Hatia. We had many places to visit. Being a Social Sciences school teacher, traveling to places is always exciting to me. We were going to visit a place that promises a lot of nature. We scheduled our first trip to Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, which we came across through one of my close female friends talking about her recent trip to this place. It didn’t take us enough time to choose the sanctuary, as our first vacation spot. My kids love nature and animals. I believe a trip to the places like this can help them learn more about the flora and fauna around India. We started from our hotel after small refreshment; we had our seats reserved in a Volvo bus, which took us to the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.

After a small breather, we started off to the sanctuary. Though a female in thirties and a culture lover, I was excited to explore the place for any historical places, museums or monuments. The sanctuary lies at an altitude of 3000 feet and was surrounded with evergreen forests. My kids were excited to listen to the chirping of birds and sounds of animals as we started trekking into the forest. Our guide, one assigned by the hotel, showed us the hideouts of some animals. We could spot a few guars, gharials, muggers, barking deer, sloth bear and porcupines. I was looking for the mammoths and could not spot any one immediately. However, I was lucky to see a cow elephant at a distance.

Unlike the other sanctuaries, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary was known much for the flora and fauna. I recollected that the variety and density has lost over the years for various reasons. We trekked into the forest for a few hours enjoying the woods and greenery around. Since we were tired, we returned and stopped at a Lord Shiva temple and offered our prayers. On the way back, we had a brief halt in Jamshedpur from where we had delicious food from a best in class hotel. I also went shopping with my kids looking for some mementoes to carry back home.
